ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Life Cycle of the Devon Red Legged Robber Fly
Featuring a stunning and visually striking 6m biomechanical sculpture and set, created from a salvaged Apache Piper aircraft fuselage and mutated into an aerial rig and DJ booth in the form of an insect, the story is a representation of the transformation cycle of the Robber Fly. The fly struggles as it fights to emerge from its cocoon and escape its earthly bounds, transforming itself into a winged creature. The life cycle show is a celebration of insects and their metamorphoses. It’s time to fly!
The transformation from pupae to winged creature is one of the greatest magical and untold stories in the world of insects. The Devon red legged Robber Fly is capable of flying at speeds of up to 40 miles an hour and is found on the South Devon coastline at Prawle and surrounding areas. The Robber Fly is part of the delicate ecobalance that is being threatened by the climate crisis and is one of the insects that Life On The Edge is focused on.
With costumes highlighting the unseen beauty and complexity of our natural world, the 3 cast members use theatre, dance and aerial circus to tell a fascinating story of the Robber Fly's metamorphosis. ‘The Life Cycle of the Devon Redlegged Robber Fly’ features a live DJ and a cutting edge soundtrack combining found sound and soundscape sourced from and inspired by the insects and environment of the South Devon landscape.
The use of a salvaged fuselage for the performance platform and as a base for the sound equipment and aerial acrobatics is a deliberate choice celebrating flight and emphasising recycling and reusing resources.
The Robber Fly can be performed to any size audience provided sightlines are clear (there will be some floor work). Length of performance 45 minutes. No interval.
This is a commission from NDP partners Doorstep Arts, South Devon National Landscapes and the Life on the Edge project.
